Wanakaa Katika Masumbo

After three days at an island in the Indian Ocean, and a day at Mikumi National Park in central Tanzania, we arrived at Masumbo (our campus) just east of Iringa, Tanzania on Tuesday afternoon. It is good to have a place to call home. My bags are unpacked and my books have found their way safely onto the shelves in the large one room building where we have classes. Campus is nestled in a beautiful bend of the Little Ruaha River, and we each live in a tent pitched beneath a stick and grass hut called a 'banda'. Dr. Arensen (known as 'Bwana Jon') lectures on history and culture in East Africa from 9-11 every day, and we have Intermediate Swahili from 11-12:30ish. Lunch is at 1 everyday and the afternoons are generaly flexible: today we're in town (Iringa), and yesterday we met to start our photography class. We have lots of time to read, write, and process what we are learning. I love it here at Masumbo!

I battle between joy at your joy and jealousy at wanting to be there. Send us digitals and we'll close our eyes and pretend we're back...

Paul: It's great to hear that after your delays in NYC, you are there safely and the semester is starting off well. Because of your gift of being able to sleep anywhere and to give up your bed (believe me... it's a gift), I know that the tent conditions are just for you. How does your beard look now? And, the big question is, are you going to grow your hair out again?

I miss you and our apartment wishes we could have a fifth member, but that pales into comparison of how excited I am for the experience you are having and will have there in Tanzania. Keep us updated on how we can petition and praise on behalf of you. Love you man!
