Freefall, Pot, and Elephants

After a disappointing mapping flight over Mafwomero Forest Reserve this morning, our flight became interesting when we flew into the downdraft of a cloud and lost 1500 ft. in a matter of seconds. On account of this, David decided to do a low-level reconaissance flight over Ukwiva Forest Reserve, which is MASSIVE and largely unexplored. We made two discoveries:

1. Tanzanian farmers are growing huge fields of pot deep in the reserve, far away from the prying eyes of their village neighbors.

2. On the other end of the forest reserve, there are fresh paths winding distinctly through the brush, conclusive evidence of the presence of elephants in an area where they had not been previously recorded!

We can only hope that the elephants make their way to the other end of Ukwiva to decimate the vast fields of cannabis indica.

Unfortunately, I have no photographic evidence to post; my shutter finger will be faster next time.

Hundreds of stoned elephants...sounds like it would indeed make a good picture.

Keep enjoying the adventure!
