My botanist mother is stumped thus far. Can anyone identify this mystery orchid photographed in State College, PA, USA on 7.14.09? Lens cap for size comparison is 67mm in diameter.
bifocals! when i saw this plant on sunday, i thought it was similar to squirrel corn or dutchmen's breeches in having pocket-like flowers. thanks to your excellent picture, i now see the flower has five rrrrreally curved petals, not 2 or 3 pockets. i think it is a striped wintergreen, Chimaphila maculata. (how do you use italics or underlining in these comments?)
My wife Kat and I moved to State College last summer, where I am working for the Office of Global Programs at Penn State University. We're new parents of Anna (9/12/08) and learning the ropes a day at a time. We're lovers of life, spontaneity, food, and 90's alternative rock.
