Camping at Ilusi

ilusi_path

This past weekend Katrina and I had the chance to go camping with our friends the Wingfields on the Ilusi Sand River near Ruaha National Park. We enjoyed swimming, reading, playing with our godson Ben, and birding (or should I say "I enjoyed birding"). On our way back to Iringa on Sunday we stopped by Pete Coppolillo's research camp at Lunda, where we got the grand tour and enjoyed drinks while watching hippos in the Great Ruaha River from their deck.

Highlights:
1. swimming with Ben
2. reading in the hammock
3. hyena, duiker, and vervet monkey tracks in the sand
4. five new birds for Paul: Southern Cordon-Bleu, African Golden Oriole, Red-billed Firefinch, Collared Sunbird, African Hawk Eagle
5. early morning walks down the river
6. bush driving
7. spotting a Serval Cat in broad daylight
8. tour of Pete's Lunda Camp

My dear Paul,
The birding bug has bitten you, eh? Me too, my friend. I keep lists for each country and rejoice mightily whenever I see some new feathered creature. Last weekend I saw my first dipper, a little robin-like bird that walks on the bottom of fast-flowing streams in search of its food. Do you think American birds are going to be exciting too?
