Moss Lake Blizzard (Feb. 2006)
This is the second assignment for my photography class this semester. For those of you wondering about the technique on this one, I stitched three photos together taken from a tripod. After blending, I added color to the tree on the far left, not because I like it, but rather to comply with project goals. We were supposed to compose a B&W panoramic with one element of color. It will be printed to scale 11x5 for my critique.
Stylistically, I am somewhat of a purist when it comes to B&W, more in line with Alfred Stieglitz or Ansel Adams. So I cringed when I added the color element. I think it adds warmth to the image, but detracts from the overall impression of winter in western New York. I'll make one print pure B&W for Katrina and I to keep.
Any thoughts?

Oh my goodness Paul, I had no idea you were such a fantastic photographer!
Paul, I think it's pheNOmenal. Really, truly, and honestly. And, call me crazy, or just not aesthetically Ansel-Adams-ish enough, but I actually LIKE the green tree! :)
Paul, it is really beautiful!!! Show us the printed and enlarged copy, okay? Can't wait for K to be back in U.S. so I could talk to her on the phone. :)
I like it. I'm not sure why, though. There are things I really like about the big blob of trees on the right (adds depth, adds more contrast to the green) and things I don't like (almost takes away from the starkness of the green, unbalances the composition a bit). But then again, I kind of like how the composition is a bit unbalanced. So I guess the verdict is that I really like it, even though there are parts of it that parts of me want to dislike. Does that make sense?
I love you Paul. And I love your pictures. I'll shut up now. Keep snappin'.
It's beautiful, Paul. Truly. And I think I could go either way with the pine tree... at first when you were describing it, I thought the same as you, but then after studying it for a while... grins It kind of grew on me. :)
love ya!
Rachel
I just see that and wanna go there :-)
