My First New Year's as a Minority

This New Year's was particularly memorable! Let me give you an overview:

1. An AMAZING dinner of pineapple shrimp, cashew chicken, spicy tofu, sweet and sour pork, spicy eggplant, rice, Taiwan Beer, and tea with Katrina, Lawrence, Kuya, and Claire.

2. An enjoyable (if brief) visit to the Ngo's, including new friends, Balderdash, strawberries and cream, Kenyan coffee, and part of a movie about a cheetah in South Africa.

3. Tiger City, the Times Square of Taichung, for the countdown with Taiwanese pop stars and the tightest crowd I've ever experienced in my life (kinda fun!).

4. Hot chocolate in the mountains, looking west across the plain of Taichung, with lights as far as the eye can see. Beautiful in a very different sort of way than my house, Houghton, or Masumbo. A sidenote, the hot chocolate at this bus turned coffeebar was more like unsweetened black tea with cocoa dumped in...next time I might try expresso. :-)

It was interesting (though strangely not uncomfortable at all) to spend the entire evening as part of the vast minority of non-Asians amongst tens of thousands of people!

It sounds like you guys had a blast! And while you and Kat and the gang were out on the "town" in Taiwan, me, Amy, Sam, and her parents were enjoying a peaceful evening watching the very strange and amusing Japanese custom of 'the war of the sexes with music' on TV, a full 4 hours. And playing boggle and eating a traditional New Year's Eve soba noodle soup dish at the turning of the new year.
wow! I miss you guys so much!!
I can hardly believe it's been 4 months! And in 4 more, I'm going to be at your HOUSE! crazy!
I love you guys so much!!
Get a hug from Amy from me. grins

love ya,
Rachel
